Holy Child Primary School, Derry

Wednesdays in Primary 5 🇪🇬

22nd Apr 2026

Our P5 class had an exciting and engaging World Around Us Wednesday, packed with exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning!

We began by diving into the world of maps, where the children practised using directional language to navigate their way across the globe. They travelled to different countries, with a special focus on Egypt, building their confidence in geography and numeracy skills while having great fun along the way.

Linking with our topic, the children then took part in a STEM challenge where they worked collaboratively to design and build their own pyramids. They showed fantastic teamwork and problem-solving skills, carefully measuring the length and width of their structures to ensure accuracy and stability.

To support our literacy work, we used our Thinking Matters describing frame, encouraging the children to create imaginative similes. This helped to reinforce our grammar learning objective in a meaningful and creative way.

The excitement continued with an interactive iPad activity, where the children explored Ancient Egypt in a fun and immersive way.

It was a day full of curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm. The children were fully engaged throughout and truly had the best day!
