Primary 6 learn how to use speech marks

4th Nov 2025

Primary 6 had a fun and creative lesson learning how to use speech marks in direct speech. They began by searching for examples of direct speech in their favourite books, spotting how authors use punctuation to show when someone is speaking. To make the activity more hands on, the class used macaroni to represent the speech marks and lentils to show the full stops. This helped everyone clearly see where punctuation belongs in a sentence with dialogue. Once they understood the rules, the pupils created their own sentences using macaroni and lentils to punctuate them correctly, turning grammar practice into a fun and memorable learning experience.
