Holy Child PS put the welcome mat out for Wednesday’s visit of Dr Mark Browne, Permanent Secretary for the Department of Education who paid a courtesy visit to the Creggan School.

The Secretary was met by a guard of honour of pupil representatives and presented with a copy of the school’s ‘My Butterfly Journal’ by P7 pupils Emily and Daisy.

Then followed a tour of the primary school accompanied by Principal Nicola Cullen, Vice Principal Pat Concannon, Board of Governor’s chair Eugene Dunn and Fr. Joseph Gormley, Governor Trustee.

First port of call was Mrs. McMonagle’s P1 class taking part in their indoor soccer lesson in the school gym, courtesy of Maiden City coach Ryan Semple who put the youngsters through their paces.

Then it was outdoors and a view of the school’s new Foundation Area – the Forest School, where Dr. Browne met with P2 students who gave the ‘thumbs up’ to the latest addition to the school set up.

The Permanent Secretary also met with P6 pupils at the ICT suite and got a first-hand view of how ‘Mathletics’ works in the school. Then followed a ‘Famine’ Q&A with P7 students in Mr. O’Faolain’s class, where the class discussed their latest project ‘The Famine in Ireland’.

After a final tour to the nursery section of the school, there followed a meeting with management and governors.

Speaking after Wednesday’s visit, principal Ms. Nicola Cullen in thanking the Permanent Secretary for calling to the school, added: ‘We were delighted to welcome Dr Mark Browne to Holy Child Primary and Nursery School today. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase the great work of our students, our pastoral care provision and discuss our School Enhancement Programme plans.
