Earthquake engineering in P5B 👷🏻🏠

18th Feb 2026

Primary 5 explored what happens to buildings during an earthquake using a fun and hands-on experiment.

Using marshmallows, the kids built their own structures. The marshmallows acted like connectors, and the sticks formed the building frames. Once their buildings were complete, it was time to test them!

To simulate an earthquake, the children applied force by shaking the surface and gently pushing their structures. They watched closely to see:

  • Which buildings stayed standing

  • Which ones bent or collapsed

  • How size and shape affected strength

The kids quickly learned that earthquakes create forces that move buildings from side to side, and that stronger designs can better handle those forces.
A great lesson all round to explore natural disasters 🌋⚡️🪨
